The lamps feature a flat, wide, saucer-shaped (or disc-shaped) silhouette, a modern interpretation of classic Japanese paper lanterns. Each lamp is meticulously handcrafted from soft washi paper made from delicate mulberry bark, emitting a warm and inviting glow. This lighting effect resembles the light and shadows cast by sunlight filtering through traditional Japanese shoji screens. These sculptural lamps create a serene and elegant atmosphere, transforming ordinary spaces into havens of understated luxury.

The shade is pulled wide and pressed low, closer to a lens than a sphere. It reads as a broad horizontal plane rather than a hanging ball — which is why it works under ceilings that a globe of the same width would crowd.

Genuine Japanese washi, made from long mulberry fibres, scatters light inside the paper before releasing it. No hotspot, no glare — and when lit, the fibre lines become faintly visible across the surface.

Sizing tip: Over a dining table, choose a diameter roughly 12″ less than the table width, and hang the base of the shade 30–36″ above the tabletop. Because the shade is flat rather than round, it takes far less headroom than a globe of the same width — the widest size stands only 13.8″ tall, so it reads generous without closing the room in. The cord is 59″ as standard and shortened at installation.

Paper Pendant Light FAQ

What is the shade actually made of?

Mulberry paper, pasted by hand over a steel-wire frame with an iron ceiling fitting. Mulberry fibres are long and strong, which is why a paper shade this wide holds its shape — and why light passing through it comes out soft instead of sharp.

Why don't the seams look exactly like the photos?

Because the paper is applied by hand, the seam positions and fibre direction differ on every shade. Two lamps side by side will not match panel for panel. This is how a hand-pasted shade is meant to look, and it is the clearest way to tell one from a moulded plastic imitation.

Is a bulb included?

Yes — a 10W dimmable LED bulb is included free with every light, so it works straight out of the box. The socket is a standard E26 or E27 base, 40W maximum, if you ever want to change it. When you do, choose warm white around 2700K; cool white drains the warmth out of paper and makes it look grey.

Can the brightness be adjusted?

Yes. The included bulb dims by remote, so you can set the level from across the room without wiring a dimmer switch into the wall. Handy in a dining room, where you want it bright while cooking and low once everyone sits down.

Which size should I choose?

Three diameters. 17.7″ suits a bedside, an entryway or a reading corner. 25.6″ is the everyday choice for a dining table of 42–54″ or a main bedroom. 34.6″ is a statement over a large table or in an open-plan room. Over a table, aim for a diameter roughly 12″ less than the table width.

Will the largest size make my room feel low?

Less than you would expect. The shade is flat rather than round, so the 34.6″ version stands only 13.8″ tall — a globe of the same width would take nearly three times the headroom. You get generous width without the fixture pressing down into the room.

How is it installed, and how long is the cord?

It is hardwired to a standard ceiling junction box. The cord is 59″ as standard and shortened on site; email us before ordering if you need a longer drop, or if you are fitting it to a sloped ceiling. For the 34.6″ size we suggest two people — one to hold the shade clear while the other works at the box.

Can I use it in a bathroom?

No. This is a paper shade rated IP20 for dry indoor locations, and steam is the one thing paper cannot recover from — damp air makes it cockle, stain and loosen at the seams, permanently. Keep it to bedrooms, dining rooms, halls and stairwells.

How do I clean a paper shade?

Dry methods only. A feather duster or a soft dry brush is all it needs; a vacuum on its lowest setting works if you keep the nozzle off the surface. Never use water, a damp cloth or any cleaning spray — moisture marks mulberry paper and the mark does not come out. Switch off and let the fixture cool first.
