ABOUT THE ART
Gothic Butterflies is originally an illustration by Charles Dessalines D'Orbigny (1806-1876), a French naturalist, botanist and geologist born into a family of naturalists and explorers, the most well known being his older brother Alcide, a noted zoologist and paleontologist. This art can be found in “Dictionnaire Universel d’Histoire Naturelle" (1849) a collection of illustrated encylopedias of natural history edited by D’Orbigny. The volumes contained 288 highly detailed and scientifically accurate hand-colored engravings.
